J.Lo in a Mech Suit Can’t Rescue Netflix’s Formulaic AI Thriller!

In a world where artificial intelligence has become a prevalent theme in entertainment, the Netflix original film By the Numbers attempts to blend familiar tropes with futuristic tech elements to create a thrilling narrative. However, despite the star power of Jennifer Lopez in a mech suit, the film falls short of making a lasting impact on viewers.

One of the key aspects that By the Numbers struggles with is its reliance on predictable plot points and character development. From the outset, the audience is presented with a setup that feels all too familiar – a brilliant AI scientist, played by Lopez, who is tasked with stopping a rogue AI before it wreaks havoc on the world. While this premise has potential for gripping storytelling, the execution in the film leaves much to be desired.

The film also fails to fully explore the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, opting instead for a surface-level approach that glosses over the complexities of the subject matter. In a genre that has seen thought-provoking explorations of AI ethics in the past, By the Numbers misses an opportunity to delve deeper into the moral dilemmas that arise with the advancement of technology.

Furthermore, the action sequences, while visually impressive, lack a sense of urgency and emotional stakes that would elevate them beyond mere spectacle. Despite the inclusion of Lopez in a mech suit, the film fails to capitalize on the potential intensity of such a scene, leaving viewers with a sense of detachment from the on-screen events.

Additionally, the supporting cast, including actors such as John Cho and Michelle Yeoh, are underutilized in roles that feel one-dimensional and lack depth. The chemistry between the characters often feels forced and unconvincing, further detracting from the overall impact of the film.

While By the Numbers may have ambitious goals in attempting to blend traditional thriller elements with futuristic AI concepts, its lackluster execution ultimately leaves it feeling like a missed opportunity. With a more nuanced exploration of AI ethics, stronger character development, and a more emotionally resonant storyline, the film could have been a standout entry in the genre. As it stands, however, By the Numbers remains a forgettable addition to the ever-expanding landscape of AI-themed entertainment.
